PTARMIGAN ARTS JURYING PROCEDURES

The 2008 fall and winter jury dates are the third Wednesday of each month:

Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19, and Dec. 17.   We meet at the gallery at 6 p.m.

1)   Prospective Artists are asked to bring a selection of their body of work which shows representative samples of what they intend to sell at the gallery.  Examples: for Fine Art or photography, please bring examples of framed originals, as well as shrink-wrapped prints, and cards in envelopes or sleeves; jewelry: all styles and techniques reflected in each piece for sale; pottery/ceramics: examples of production pottery as well as decorative or sculptural.  A minimum of three original pieces is required, but more may be submitted, or photographs of designs.

2)   Fine Art and Craft Categories include (but are not limited to) leather, metal, wood, glass, ceramics, fiber, painting, photography, graphics, collage/assemblage, and mixed media.

3)   Minimum Standards:

Work should show that the artist has an understanding of design and the characteristics of the materials chosen.  A successful work will be the result of a careful design process with obvious consideration used by the artist in determining proportions, structural integrity, composition, materials and colors.

Work should portray the personal aesthetics of the maker and be recognizable as the artist’s own.  A definite style and level of skill must be evident.  Work that is evidently derivative of other artists, or of commercial patterns, kits, classes or instruction will not be accepted.  Work must meet common standards for safety, with proper labeling, as in “dishwasher safe”, etc., as necessary.  All work must be finished and ready to hang or display: i.e. framed, matte or shrink-wrapped, if applicable.  The overall presentation of the art should be of high quality.

The applicant must live in Alaska, except under special circumstances to be determined at the time of jurying.

4)   Statement - The artist should submit a brief statement, limited to one page, about his/her work, which may include: background, origin, statement about designs, information about specific craft process, special features or remarks about work which will help the jurors to understand the artist’s craft and any information about materials.

5)   Incoming artists may present their work at the meeting and answer questions, but once this is done they must leave during the discussion and vote.  The other option is to leave the work at the gallery on the day of the meeting and Jewels will present the work to the jury.

6)   Results of Jurying – You will be notified of the results within 48 hours of the meeting.

7)   Jury – The jury will include any artists from the gallery.  Each artist has one vote and there can be no fewer than ¼ of the tenants of the gallery to make a quorum – of this ¼ minimum, 2/3 of the vote is required for a majority.  If a quorum is not present at the meeting, the jurying will be left to the discretion of Jewels.

8)   If an artist is approved for one medium and wishes to place something in the gallery which falls into a different category or departs drastically in type from his/her previously accepted work, he/she must submit this “new” work to the jury for a vote.

9)   All art sold through the gallery must be consistent with the quality originally approved by the jury.

10) Standards - The jurors are asked to use the following criteria in deciding on an applicant’s work.

The prospective artist’s work should demonstrate that he or she can apply “raw” materials, (be they media, stone, beads, glass, wood) techniques and processes with sufficient skill, confidence and sensitivity to show their intentions are carried out in their artwork.
