Welcome New Artist Michelle Anderson
Ptarmigan Arts Gallery is excited to welcome new artist and member Michelle Anderson. Her business is called “Sister, Tides Out!” Her artwork includes unique baskets and beaded earrings.
Michelle is Yupik Eskimo and Aleutiiq. She grew up in Clark’s Point, graduated from Homer High School, and has lived most of her adult life in Chignik Lagoon. These Bristol Bay communities are small, isolated, remote-rural-Alaskan Native, and Commercial Fishing Communities with populations of around 70 people. She loves coming to Homer to visit her family.
As with most coastal communities, Chignik Lagoon lives by tides and weather. She especially loves hearing, “Sister, Tide’s Out!” This is where the name of her business came from. Her mother has helped her along with siblings to develop a love for the beach. They collect sea glass, shells, rocks, feathers, driftwood and other special beach finds.
Michelle believes it is important to find one’s happy place. Being by the water, on the water, in the water, under the water, and even drinking water are her happy place. She finds great pleasure in sharing the mix of new and traditional materials and methods to create basket designs with beach finds. She also offers a variety of beaded earrings. Welcome Michelle!
