Welcome New Artist Michael Reeves

Ptarmigan Arts Gallery is pleased to announce our newest member artist Michael Reeves.  In his description of his artwork, he said that “my current motivation is to create art which appeals to both visitors and local residents”.

Michael is retired and has spent the last three winters in Alaska.  He was born on the East Coast and raised by his mother who was also an artist.  As an adult, he made a living as an artist doing portraits, billboards, and other commercial artwork.  After art school, Michael restored the ceiling of the First Church of New York and other church ceilings 

Michael now lives near Anchor Point and previously had his artwork at the Fireweed Gallery.  He does several types of artwork including ceramics and sculpting in wood.  His current artwork focuses on Alaskans and Alaska themes. Here is a brief description of Michael’s artistic process:

“I prefer to render in perspective and draft from a relatively accurate physical and anatomical view.  Subject matter is focused on iconic Alaskan images i.e., animals, flowers, landscapes, people etc.  However, I have sometimes distorted reality in composition, while remaining true to anatomy.  

“Mediums used are acrylics, watercolor and pastels though my background in sculpting may introduce wood carving and clay into the fray later.  I paint on locally harvested rough cut spruce, canvas and quality paper.”

With his masterful renditions of Alaskan themes on wood and paintings, his artwork offers a unique perspective that our gallery customers will especially enjoy.  Welcome Michael!
