Birds

By J. Thordarson

Welcome to Ptarmigan Arts Back Room Gallery (BRG).  Joanne Thordarson presents the May BRG exhibit with only birds in honor of Birders and the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival.  Since birds are a major subject of Joanne’s photography, this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate birds.  The photographs of birds in this show were taken in and around Homer and are typical of this area—from ducks to terns to cranes.  The digital photos are on various media–metal, silk, and canvas along with framed photographs.  Matted photos and cards are also included in the exhibit.

Joanne enjoys the interplay between birds and their environment.  They are such a spectacular subject that continues to inspire her.  As numbers of some species diminish along with their habitat, it becomes more imperative to share their wonder.

“Birds are indicators of the environment.  If they are in trouble, we know we’ll soon be in trouble.”  Roger Tory Peterson

Joanne came to Anchorage in 1998.  Icelandic by descent and growing up in Seattle, Alaska had two of her favorite things–mountains and seashore.  She then moved to Homer over four years ago.  Joanne appreciates the profound beauty of Homer and, of course, the opportunities to take photos of the great variety of birds here.  Birds never cease to be a challenge to photograph–they just won’t sit still.  She hopes you love birds, too.

The First Friday reception will be on May 1st and the Birds exhibit will be up through June 3.

“Birds are a miracle because they prove to us there is a finer, simpler state of being which we may strive to attain.”  Douglas Coupland

“To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and the flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years….is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.”  Rachel Carson
